The new i3 will introduce BMW’s sixth-generation electric drivetrain, known as Gen6 eDrive, built around an advanced 800-volt architecture. This technology is designed to improve efficiency, performance and charging speeds across the upcoming Neue Klasse family.

At the heart of the vehicle’s dynamics is a new centralized control unit called the “Heart of Joy.” This system works together with BMW’s in-house Dynamic Performance Control software to manage key driving functions including:

– Powertrain operation
– Braking and regenerative braking
– Steering inputs
– Stability and traction control

According to BMW, the system processes inputs up to ten times faster than previous architectures, enabling more precise and responsive vehicle behavior.

The fast-acting control system is especially beneficial on slippery surfaces like ice and snow. The i3 prototype’s dual-motor setup reacts instantly to traction changes, improving stability and allowing the sedan to maintain agility even in difficult conditions.

The system also reduces the need for interventions from traditional stability systems, creating smoother and more consistent cornering behavior.

Another key benefit of the new control architecture is improved energy recuperation. The system precisely manages regenerative braking, allowing the car to recover energy more frequently and more effectively—even during cornering—without compromising stability.

The second model in the Neue Klasse lineup will arrive as the BMW i3 50 xDrive, scheduled to enter production in the second half of 2026.

– Dual-motor electric drivetrain
